  • Design and Technology Curriculum Roadmap

National Curriculum

The National Curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook

Design and Technology Vision

Our aim is for children to become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens who are able to take risks. We strive to achieve this by enabling children to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems. We aim for children to develop a critical understanding of how designs and products impact daily life and the wider world, by utilising their evaluation skills. Heston Primary School students become practical problem-solvers who are able to apply their knowledge, in order to design and test out their ideas.

Our Design and Technology Curriculum

Our Design and Technology curriculum provides pupils with meaningful opportunities to develop their creativity and imagination in order to solve real-life problems.  Practical learning enables pupils to design, make and evaluate products, whilst furthering their knowledge and understanding of technical vocabulary.

The National Curriculum underpins and informs our Design and Technology curriculum. In addition to this, we use and adapt the Kapow scheme in order to offer our learners an exciting Design and Technology curriulum. Opportunities within our Design and Technology curriculum include: creating a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products with real-life purposes. We also invite STEM ambassadors to work with our children, so that they are able to see how Design and Technology skills are applicable to future employment opportunities.

Design and Technology at Heston Primary School, encourages children to solve problems, both as individuals, and as members of a team. This promotes the mental, physical, social and cultural development of our children, and prepares them for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences in later life.

For more information about our Design and Technology Curriculum, please contact the school office; we will provide you with our subject matrices and knowledge organisers for this area. Other details around our curriculum activities and offer, can be accessed by parents/carers on HestonLink (school's online learning platform).
